Do promoted clubs start better?

There is a train of thought that promoted clubs perform better at the beginning of the season than at the end. This analysis explodes this myth by looking at the last 18 seasons of Premier League data.

Fans of the Premier League’s three newcomers, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Hull City, will be hoping to get a good start to the 2013/2014 season but is there any evidence that newly promoted clubs perform better in the first half of the season than in the second? In order to investigate this, we raided the Infostrada Sports database and split the last 18 seasons of the Premier League into two for all of the promoted clubs.

  1. According to me none of the teams played well in the start of the season. I think that Cardiff could finish above the relegation zone, but Crystal Palace and Hull City are favorites for relegation.
